What is HPHT Diamond?
HPHT stands for High Pressure High Temperature. This process replicates the natural conditions under which diamonds form deep within the earth, but in a controlled laboratory environment . Using a cubic press with six anvils applying pressure from all sides, we create the extreme conditions needed for diamond growth.
The HPHT Process – Step by Step
Raw Materials: Inside the press, we place a small diamond seed, graphite as the carbon source, and a metal catalyst (typically iron or nickel) . This combination provides everything needed for crystal growth.
Extreme Conditions: Under very high pressure and elevated temperature, the metal catalyst melts . The graphite dissolves into the molten metal, and carbon atoms migrate through the melt to the cooler diamond seed.
Crystal Growth: Carbon atoms deposit onto the seed layer by layer, growing a new diamond crystal . This process continues until the desired size is achieved.
Recovery and Purification: After growth, the cell is cooled and opened. The diamond is then cleaned through acid washing to remove residual metal and graphite .
Sorting and Finishing: The rough crystals are sorted and screened. Finally, they undergo precision cutting and polishing to become the finished HPHT diamond you see in jewelry and industrial applications.
